Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
